The calming dark orange glow of a Himalayan salt lamp may be more than just a nice décor to keep on your desk – or in my case on my bedside table. Their benefits actually lie in the pink salt structure. It’s a thing to consider if you’re looking for something that aids with any allergy problems or mental overload when you’re stressed.
They feel so calming so lets have a closer look at why and why I recommend you invest in one.
What exactly is a Himalayan salt lamp?
A Himalayan salt lamp is actually a block of rock salt (amazing right?), carved into a lamp with a light bulb inserted inside. Rock salt or halite can vary in colour somewhere between light blue, to purple and off-white, but the Himalayan lamps are pink and orange due to the rich mineral consistency of the salt. These lamps originate from an area in Pakistan and this very area is the only source of real Himalayan pink salt.
How do Himalayan salt lamps work?
The two main reasons for the benefits of the Himalayan salt lamp are the heat produced by the light bulb the salt is hygroscopic (it attracts the water to itself)
There is always water vapour present in our living areas and this vapour also contains pollutants, such as mould, bacteria, dust, and allergens.
In other words, the air that surrounds you may cause allergies and breathing problems. The magic of the Himalayan salt lamp lies in the fact that these pollutants get trapped in the salt. How? Well, when the lamp warms up, the salt dries out, releasing the cleansed vapour back into the air, while the pollutants remain trapped in the lamp.
Negative and positive ions- why do they matter?
Another important quality of Himalayan salt lamps are the negative ions. Let’s recap a quick chemistry lesson in a few lines:
Negative ions occur naturally around running water, such as waterfalls and waves at the beach.
That’s why you might feel loaded with energy at the beach. Another source of negative ions are lightning storms. (I’ve gotta say I LOVE lightening storms and this might be why).
The negative ions actually boost the intake of oxygen to the brain, which means the more negative ions around you, the more oxygen in your brain, and therefore, the more mental energy for you.
The beneficial effects of negative ions don’t stop with waterfalls and oxygen, however. These ions may also protect us from various components in the air that cause allergies, irritated throat, and sneezing. Last but not least, the negative ions also neutralise the positive ions.
The positive ions are known as the unhealthy ions; an electro-smog, coming from various electronic devices that we use on a daily basis, such as your mobile phone, television and computers.
These ions may cause long-term negative effects on our health. When you’re exposed to the negative or harmful environment, the simplest thing is to neutralise that environment, making it stress-less and reduce the electro smog.
And that’s where these salt lamps come into play: they manage to neutralise the positive ions with the negative ions they contain.
Benefits of a Himalayan salt lamp
While there are no scientific studies that entirely back up the benefits of Himalayan salt lamps, there are numerous testimonials that can prove otherwise:
1. They make beautiful lamps
First of all, there is no denying that these salt lamps make a beautiful bedroom, living room or even a workspace decoration. In case you’re looking for something cosy, Himalayan salt lamps are definitely a thing to consider having. After all, that calming glow truly is able to soothe a tired eye and mind.
What’s great about them in a bedroom is you get a very soft glow – and I ensured I bought mine with a dimmer switch so that I can have as gentle a brightness as I choose.
2. A natural air cleanser
As mentioned, the salt attracts water to itself. When a salt lamp is heated, the salt dries out, filtering the air in the process. In case you’re not one for house plants, this lamp might be the next best thing, cleansing the air with minimum maintenance.
Just turn the lamp off every now and again, wipe it with a damp cloth and turn it back on for the best effect.
3. A natural allergy and asthma aid
Since a Himalayan salt lamp has the ability to attract water to itself and the harmful elements in the air with it, it only means that by cleansing the air, these lamps also ease asthma and allergy problems you may have by improving the quality of the air around you.
4. Aid with seasonal affective disorder
Seasonal affective disorder or SAD is actually a mood disorder that causes people to feel more depressed at certain times of the year, especially winter. The soothing and calming deep glow of the Himalayan salt lamps may calm and balance the mood and minimise the effects of the seasonal changes.
5. Better mood and concentration
The same way as a Himalayan salt lamp can influence SAD, they can also influence and improve our mood just with the soothing glow.
Apart from the glow, it is also the negative ions that better our mood and improve our concentration. Think of spending a day on the beach: the smell of sea salt, the sound of waves make you feel revitalised, relaxed, and calm.
6. Neutralize electromagnetic radiation
Not only is a a Himalayan salt lamp able to remove the pollutants; they are also able to neutralise the electro smog, otherwise known as an electromagnetic radiation, which we’re exposed to on a daily basis.
Even though this is definitely another benefit of the Himalayan salt lamps, it is worth mentioning that even though they do manage to eliminate a certain amount of these positive ions, they are not as strong as a regular ioniser.
Think of it this way: consider the negative ions from the salt lamp as just another of its many benefits, but not the crucial one.
7. Improve sleep
By placing a Himalayan salt lamp into your bedroom it may result in better sleep.
The negative ions increase the levels of oxygen flow to your brain, which is the exact opposite of the positive ions coming from your cell phone on your bedside table. That’s why a salt lamp may help you regulate your sleep patterns and get you a good night’s sleep.
So where to buy your own Himalayan salt lamp?
I got mine from Amazon with a dimmer switch included (it was actually a Christmas present from my husband but I pointed him in the right direction!). There are different sizes to choose from.
My exact same one doesn’t appear to be available for sale anymore sadly but to give you an idea it’s a lot like this one from Amazon for £13.99. And there are plenty of others to choose from.
I would say the bigger the better. Mine is 2-3kg and quite small but is perfect for my bedside table. If you have a larger room, you might want to get a bigger lamp.
I’m also going to get one for my desk soon because they are so calming and it could help balance positive ions from my computer with negative ones which are much better for you as talked about earlier.
What do you think? Do you own a salt lamp or fancy getting one for yourself? Leave a comment! 🙂
